Ruffner Glossary of Terms: 

Front Row - Supplementary online math program some teachers choose to use. Students work at their individual levels. 

DIBELS - Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills. Assessment given to all K-3rd grade students three times a year to assess early literacy and reading skills. Also used throughout the year to assess students who may require further assessing. 

LSIC - Local School Improvement Council. Membership of the LSIC is comprised of teachers, service personnel, bus drivers, parents, business and community representatives. An election occurs annually for membership. The LSIC is directly involved with the operation of the local school in many ways. The LSIC reviews discipline data and procedures yearly and submits written recommendations to the local school board. They encourage involvement of the school community with the school operation through regular LSIC meetings and collaboration. They support local initiative for school improvement by being directly involved with the strategic planning and innovative ideas. A direct link with the local school board occurs through an annual meeting at which all school aspects inclusive of academics, athletics, discipline, school climate, facilities, needs, improvement and recommendations are presented and discussed. PBL- Project-Based Learning. Project Based Learning is a teaching method in which students gain knowledge and skills by working for an extended period of time to investigate and respond to an engaging and complex question, problem, or challenge. (

PBS - Positive Behavior Support. A set of research-based strategies used to increase quality of life and decrease problem behavior by teaching new skills and making changes in a person's environment. Positive behavior support combines:

  • valid outcomes;
  • behavioral and biomedical science;
  • validated procedures; and
  • systems change to enhance quality of life and reduce problem behaviors 

Stars Assemblies - Assemblies at Ruffner, led by fifth grade students, that celebrate various behavioral and leadership successes at school 

The RUN - Ruffner Unlimited News. Weekly newsletter emailed to parents and staff regarding upcoming events, school information, and kudos.
